Good Monday morning and welcome back to Dawson Road today!
What a weekend - G8, G20, FIFA, rain and more rain. By now you're very aware that we have an extraordinary amount of construction going on in the city of Guelph. Most of this started about two months ago, so you're no stranger to construction pylons, construction equipment, stacks of pipes and piles of dirt and gravel. So why would a driver not slow down when going through a construction zone. With reference to Dawson Road the normal speed limit in non-construction times is 50 kph.
I was down at my shop Saturday evening working outside, the weather was pleasant and there was no construction going on. Last week the crews worked on sanitary hookups to businesses on the north side of Dawson Road and in order to accomplish that they had to cut and dig across the existing paved lane. This resulted in a temporary rough and low spot about 15 feet across. We have one of these in front of our Plants For All shop at 66 Dawson Rd and as shown in the first picture taken Saturday evening. Several times while working outside, I was alerted by the sound of vehicles banging, rumbling, and shaking because of people driving too quickly over this short stretch of rough road. There was even one fellow in a silver Chevy something or other that sounded like it bottomed out and I could clearly hear his expletive from about 50 feet away. People, use common sense and slowdown, you're in a construction zone. I don't think you'll have much of a case if you try to claim against the city for vehicle repairs.
I was down at the shop again last night and because of all the rain this little rough patch of road was filled in like a large puddle as shown in the next picture. This seemed to be enough to encourage the drivers to slow down. Kudos to the city transit drivers who very deliberately slowed their large buses down at these patches.

One thing I noticed while working outside Saturday night was that my security perimeter lights did not come on as usually scheduled. A brief investigation indicated that my automatic timer was not right. I realized that when the Hydro disconnected our power for a short time to do an electrical hook up in the construction area, that I had not reset my automatic timer. So a note to the other businesses on Dawson Road, check your perimeter lights and make sure they're coming on as scheduled.
Starting today, if the weather will allow them, the construction crews will be working on new water main construction starting at Speedvale Avenue. Also this week they will be finishing off the new sanitary service hookups and removing old sanitary sewers.

This will be a short week for most people with Canada Day being celebrated on Thursday July the first. Also the new HST becomes effective on Thursday. So do your Dawson Road shopping today and Tuesday and Wednesday. The roads are open for you, we would love to see you and ask that you please drive carefully.
