W E L C O M E - We're here to help you and us !

Our City and tax dollars are re-constructing Dawson Road and we are expecting great things! On the surface - new sidewalks, bike lanes, better roadways and even trees. Down below - all kinds of new pipes, electrical connections and stuff that will make things work more efficiently.

The work is scheduled to be done by September 30, 2010. Until then there will be lots of heavy equipment moving around. The City will keep all businesses accessible. Check out this blog regularly for helpful updates on road conditions and how to get into tight areas or call us at 519-767-2161 for up-to-the-minute conditions. Dawson Road businesses need your business, to ensure we're still here to celebrate the benefits of this reconstruction project.

Monday, October 4, 2010 - Wrapping It Up !

Good Monday morning and welcome back to Dawson Road Today! During my walkabout late yesterday afternoon, it became very clear that the construction project is coming to an end. Rather than winding down the Dawson Road reconstruction project - they are wrapping it up!

I could easily see where some grading has been done and when you look at the overall road you can see it is much more level. At the start of construction today you will be directed into the left hand lane by an arrow as shown in the first picture here. This photo was taken standing at the Shelldale intersection and looking northbound along the Dawson Road construction site. The next photo is showing Dawson Road from Speedvale Avenue and looking southbound along the Dawson Road construction site. Take note of how level the roadways are and how the levels are very close to the finished grade of the property lines.

Guelph Remastered issued  an update late last week categorizing the different construction projects in the city and are listed by the relative completeness of the project. You can see that our Dawson Road project is on top of the section identified as 50 to 99% complete.

My on-site information suggests that this project should be wrapped up in two to three weeks. This depends so much upon the weather, so keep that in the back your mind. Construction crews should get around to working on the curbs and sidewalks by Wednesday of this week.

Late last week, my Meridian Credit Union installed three long strips of rubberized speed bumps into their parking lot. Meridian Credit Union is located at the corner of Speedvale Avenue  and Dawson Road.  One 24 feet strip is hampering the access from Speedvale Avenue to their parking lot, one 24 feet strip is hampering the access from Dawson Road to their parking lot and one 40 foot strip is disrupting the smooth flow of traffic through the centre of the parking lot in front of the main entrance to the building. In this city that  is notoriously known for 'traffic calming measures' when they should be improving the smooth flow of transportation through the city, the Credit Union installed these hazards. When the drivers in the city of Guelph are being forced to disrupt their regular drive routes on so many fronts due to the construction, this is one more burr in the saddle  of patience. I can only imagine that business is so good that I would choose to discourage customers from coming to my place of business.

But there are lots of good things going on, on Dawson Road Today!  Late yesterday afternoon I took this picture of wild mini snapdragon flowers actively growing just inches away from a construction site security fence. In spite of the cold weather and tons of construction equipment rumbling nearby these flowers continue to flourish and share with us.

Remember, QB2 Café and Dining at 86 Dawson Road is holding a Menu Tasting Buffet on Friday, October 15. Call Lamo or Koky  at the phone number listed in the right sidebar to get more information about this unique dining event.

Kudos go out to those planners who had the good foresight and common sense to connect the city water supply to the building site of the new Medical Clinic at 85 Dawson Road, before the roadway is finished. This will eliminate one reason to dig up our beautiful new Dawson Road at a later date.

The weather forecast for today is cool and cloudy; but rain is not expected, so I'm looking forward to a good day of construction progress. If you get a chance, come on down and see what's going on, on Dawson Road Today!
