Good Wednesday morning and welcome back to Dawson Road Today!
| Oval Concrete Pipes |
The first of September - the beginning of the end. Tuesday was a hot day for - well, everything; but the crew kept at it with the installation and hookup of the storm water sewer pipes. We have some new characters on the scene. Pictured here are some oval shaped concrete pipes that I haven't seen on site before. These were lined up Tuesday morning in front of Plants For All. I expect that they will be used to connect surface drains to the main storm water sewer system where depth-to-bury is a factor. (Did I just create a new industry term?) If I find out that they are being used for something else, I'll let you know.
Yesterday, I talked about recycling the old concrete pipes. Linda learned today that the chunks of concrete are trucked to a Lafarge facility where they are ground up. (Lafarge is a world leader in building materials with top-ranking positions in Cement, Aggregates, Concrete and Gypsum.) A huge magnet is exposed to the ground-up material to remove as much steel (wire & bars) as is practicable. It took 2 dump trucks to haul away the material that was in the picture I showed you yesterday. Each dump truck is capable of carrying up to 21 tons.
Random Cameos:
On a regular basis I will try to show pictures, not yet seen on this blog, that will add a face to the job. Let me know what you think. Pictures shown may have been taken any time since the start of the project in mid-April. Left click on the image to enlarge it.
September 1st is an important time for many - get the kids ready for school, squeeze in one more weekend of vacation fun, put summer stuff away and drag out the fall stuff. Here at Dawson Road Today, it marks the start of the last scheduled month for this construction project. Still to do?
- finish installation and hookup of surface drains to storm water system - 2 weeks
- install new curbs and sidewalks
- landscape the curbs to property lines, including new trees
- pave the new road surface and identify bike lanes
It sounds like a lot of work and it is; but it should go quickly.
At the start of today, Dawson Road is completely open and ready for your visit. The little left jog at the Sppedvale Ave end of Dawson Road is still in effect. Speedvale Ave is still reduced to 2 lanes - one eastbound and one westbound - at Dawson Road. Come onto Dawson Road from Willow Road and travel northbound on Dawson. Drive carefully, watching for road bumps and be especially watchful for the construction crew workers. Have a great day and we hope to see you on Dawson Road Today!
